Swelling and Mosquito Bites

The feet can swell up in size and shape when they experience poor circulation. However, other things may cause the feet to swell. Namely, experiencing some kind of bug bite may make the feet swell. It is very common during the warm summer months for people to get mosquito bites all over their bodies, especially on their feet. If you are experiencing swelling on the feet from a mosquito bite, there are several steps that you may consider taking. To reduce and mitigate the extent to which your feet are swelling, you might consider applying an ice pack for a short amount of time to the affected area. About 10 minutes of application time might be sufficient. Generally speaking, the mosquito bite might also be washed with soap and water. Getting a mosquito bite on the feet shouldn’t be taken lightly if there is significant swelling. Contact a podiatrist today to learn more.

Swollen feet can be a sign of an underlying condition. If you have any concerns, contact Dr. Glen Robison of AZ Foot & Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Swollen feet are a common ailment among pregnant women and people who stand or sit for extended periods. Aging may increase the possibility of swollen feet and patients who are obese often notice when their feet are swelling too. There may be medical reasons why swollen feet occur:

  • Phlebitis - A condition that causes the veins to become inflamed and can also cause leg pain.
  • Liver disease - This may lead to low blood levels of albumin which is a protein. This can cause fluid in the blood to pass into the tissues and several areas of the body can become swollen.
  • Heart failure - When the heart doesn’t pump properly the blood that is normally pumped back to the heart can pool in the veins of the legs causing swollen feet.
  • Kidney disease - One of the main functions of the kidneys is releasing excess fluid in the body. This type of condition can make it difficult for the kidneys to function properly, and as a result the feet may become swollen.
  • Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT)- This is a serious condition where blood clots form in the veins of the legs. They can block the return of blood from the legs to the heart which may cause the feet to swell. It is important to be treated by a podiatrist if this condition is present.

Swollen feet can also be caused by bone and tendon conditions, including fractures, arthritis, and tendinitis. Additionally, there may be skin and toenail conditions and an infection may cause the feet to swell. Patients who take medicine to treat high blood pressure may be prone to getting swollen feet.

Many patients elevate their feet to help relieve the swelling and this is generally a temporary remedy. When a podiatrist is consulted the reason behind the swelling can be uncovered and subsequently treated.

Hard and Soft Corns

Corns can cause patients to have severe pain, despite their small size. They can develop as a result of excess friction, which generally happens from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. A common area where a corn can be found in the side of the pinky toe. The pain can be so severe, that larger shoes may need to be purchased to lessen its severity. Corns that form between the toes are called soft corns, as they are consistently moist from the sweat that is found there. Some patients have corns that form on top of the toes, and this may be from an existing bunion or hammertoe. Patients who have small corns may find mild relief when the foot is soaked in warm water, followed by using a pumice stone that can wear the dead skin away. For more severe corns, it is suggested that a podiatrist be contacted, who can prescribe medicine that may shrink it, or possibly trim it surgically.

Benefits of Children Walking Barefoot

Research has shown there may be a connection of walking barefoot and increased cognitive abilities. When children walk barefoot, they may become more aware of different textures that are walked on, which may contribute to understanding spatial awareness. There are numerous nerves in the feet, and when shoes are frequently eliminated, the opportunity to grow new neural connections may increase. The skin on the bottom of the feet will become tougher, and walking in environments with grass or sand may help to increase a sense of freedom. Toxic stress may be decreased, and walking in these types of environments may help to regulate the nervous system. Studies have shown that babies feet are preferred receptors, and emotions may possibly be regulated when children can walk barefoot while outside. If you would like more information about the benefits of having your child walk barefoot, please speak with a podiatrist who can address any concerns you may have.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Dr. Glen Robison of AZ Foot & Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Tight Shoes and Blisters

Blisters appear on the surface of the skin and are filled with a serum that looks like water. Some blisters can be filled with blood or pus. Such skin problems are caused by friction, burning, chemical reaction, insect bites, infection. Blisters can also be caused by a pre-existing medical condition, such as chickenpox, eczema, or the herpes virus. Blisters form as the body’s natural protection from damage to the inner layer of skin. Foot blisters often result from friction from wearing tight-fitting shoes for too long. If you have a blister on your foot, it might help to keep it covered with a bandage. This is particularly important as a way of preventing bacteria from entering and causing infection if the blister bursts. If you have a blister on your foot that is not healing once the irritating cause is eliminated, or if it worsens or looks infected, it is wise to see a podiatrist for treatment.

Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact Dr. Glen Robison of AZ Foot & Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

Symptoms

(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)

  • Bubble of skin filled with fluid
  • Redness
  • Moderate to severe pain
  • Itching

Prevention & Treatment

In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.
