Gout Pain Can Be Managed

Gout is a painful, inflammatory form of arthritis. Those affected will typically feel an intense stiffness in the joints of their feet, particularly in the big toe. Schedule a visit to learn about how gout can be managed and treated.

If you are experiencing pain between the third and fourth toes, you may have a condition that is referred to as Morton’s neuroma. It is defined as a portion of nerve tissue that forms in the foot and can cause pain and discomfort. The pain can also be felt in the ball of the foot and exercising the foot may bring mild relief. Additionally, many patients have found that changing their footwear may help to alleviate a portion of the pain. This condition may develop as a result of frequently wearing high heels or participating in certain sporting activities. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the affected nerve. If you have this type of pain, it is suggested to consult with a podiatrist who can recommend the treatment that is correct for you.

Common Foot Problems for Children

Some foot conditions occur around the same amount of times or more often for children than they do for adults. There are a few complications to look out for in children. The first is ingrown toenails. Since children commonly experience growth spurts, they occasionally end up wearing shoes that are too tight. Ill-fitting shoes contribute to the emergence of ingrown toenails. Another affliction is plantar warts. These are lesions that form on the bottom of the foot. It is possible that many children do not yet have the immunity to warts that adults do. Guardians should also take note if their children have flat feet. Although many children outgrow their flat feet, it can cause them future pain. Finally, be sure to ask children about any heel pain. There are various conditions around the heel that may be sparked by a growth spurt. If your child is complaining of any type of foot or ankle pain, it is recommended that you contact a podiatrist.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact Dr. Glen Robison of AZ Foot & Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

What Is Plantar Hyperhidrosis?

The medical condition that is known as plantar hyperhidrosis refers to feet that sweat excessively and frequently. Fungal skin infections including athlete’s foot can develop as a result of this condition, and a foul odor may exist. It is important to wear shoes and socks that are made of breathable materials, as this may help to control a portion of the sweating. Additionally, patients who are affected with this condition find it beneficial to wash and dry the feet daily, followed by using foot powder. Mild relief may be found when the socks are changed numerous times throughout the day.

If you feel you have this ailment, it is advised that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can properly diagnosis and treat plantar hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis of the Feet

Hyperhidrosis is a rare disorder that can cause people to have excessive sweating of their feet. This can usually occur all on its own without rigorous activity involved. People who suffer from hyperhidrosis may also experience sweaty palms.

Although it is said that sweating is a healthy process meant to cool down the body temperature and to maintain a proper internal temperature, hyperhidrosis may prove to be a huge hindrance on a person’s everyday life.

Plantar hyperhidrosis is considered to be the main form of hyperhidrosis. Secondary hyperhidrosis can refer to sweating that occurs in areas other than the feet or hands and armpits. Often this may be a sign of it being related to another medical condition such as menopause, hyperthyroidism and even Parkinson’s disease.

In order to alleviate this condition, it is important to see your doctor so that they may prescribe the necessary medications so that you can begin to live a normal life again. If this is left untreated, it is said that it will persist throughout an individual’s life.

A last resort approach would be surgery, but it is best to speak with your doctor to find out what may be the best treatment for you.

One type of foot therapy is known as a paraffin wax treatment. It consists of an oil-based wax, mineral oil, and paraffin wax. The feet are dipped several times into the mixture, and then removed. The wax is peeled away from the skin, and many people are happy with the results of their smooth skin. The benefits of this type of therapy typically include improved circulation, soothing properties, and relief from stiff joints. Additionally, it may aid in softening rough skin. This type of treatment can help the feet to feel better after standing for the majority of the day. If you would like to know more about how a paraffin wax treatment can help the feet to feel better, please consult with a podiatrist.

Foot therapy is often necessary for those recovering from either foot deformities or foot injuries. If you have concerns regarding therapy, consult with Dr. Glen Robison from AZ Foot & Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Most Common Injuries

People who are active or athletes are prone to a variety of injuries. Therefore, it is often important to take part in physical therapy in order to quickly get back on the right track.

What to Do When Injured

Physical Therapy – This specialized treatment will focus on the affected area, speeding up recovery and the overall healing process. It is a proven method that has helped millions of people return from any injury.

During physical therapy you will undergo regimented training to get back into full form. Training is often very difficult, especially at first when the foot feels weak. Physical therapy often involves:

Basic stretching and twisting exercises – getting the feet’s mobility and flexibility up.

Massaging – the therapist will massage the injured area in order to activate the muscles and relax them.

Strengthening Exercises – this allows the muscles in the affected area to regain their full strength, a vital step towards full recovery.
